University-level Conference on Science in the period 2011-2015 “Scientific research serving the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta region, environmental protection and adaptation to climate change”

On March 18th, 2016, Can Tho University (CTU) held a university-level Conference on Science in the period 2011-2015 "Scientific research serving the socio-economic development of the Mekong Delta region, environmental protection and adaptation to climate change", within the chain of the activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the foundation of CTU (March 31st, 1966-March 31st, 2016). The Conference aimed to review the current situation of scientific research and technology transfer between the University and the localities in the MD in the period 2011-2015; share the information on science and technology; introduce scientific and technological products that can be transferred to serve the production and life; and orient scientific and technological cooperation in the period 2016-2020.

Speaking at the meeting, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan shared that "together with training, scientific and technological activities play an important role in enhancing the quality of education, the socio-economic development of the MD. In the past year, the University’s scientific and technological activities have obtained many important achievements; and the products with high scientific value are transferred. With the orientation to develop CTU to become an excellent multi-disciplinary university in research, training in order to better meet the needs of high-qualified human resources for the MD, CTU has not stopped promoting scientific research considered as a central mission of the University, to accompany the development of the MD ".


At the conference, the reports on the status and development orientation of scientific research fields were presented such as Natural Science, Engineering and Information Technology, Environment and Natural Resources, Agricultural Science and Biotechnology, Aquaculture and Fisheries, Education Science  and Social Humanities, and Economics - Politics - Law. Especially, the attendants were introduced to the CTU Improvement Project and 36 scientific research programs under this project. Accordingly, the Improvement Project is supported by the ODA loans from Japanese Government for a total project cost of more than 100 million dollars, with the aims of upgrading the University to be an excellent and internationally recognized institution of education, scientific research, technology transfer and governance; contributing to socio-economic development, climate change adaptation, environmental protection, increasing value of Agriculture and Fisheries in the MD; strengthening CTU’s capacities for providing high-quality human resources; enhancing scientific research in the field of Agriculture, Fisheries, Environment and related fields. With the 07 year (2015-2022) implementation, the Project includes 05 main components: development of human resources, implementation of joint research programs, facility construction, equipment procurement, and consulting services procurement. In the process of the component "implementation of joint research programs", CTU has published 36 research programs; in which the field of Agriculture has 16 programs, Aquaculture and Fisheries consists of 08 programs, and Environment carries out 12 programs.


The Conference has received many opinions and sharing of experiences from the participants of the local authorities, research institutes, universities, and enterprises in the region to contribute to the University’s science and technology activities; suggestions of new research directions for the products serving production and life; and suggestions of strengthening the relationship to be timely and successful in science research and technology transfer. Besides, the participants also expressed the delight and believed that CTU would achieve good results in the implementation of the Improvement Project, and desired that the success of the Project would reinforce the central role of the University in promoting the socio-economic development of the MD, in particular, and the country, in general.
