CLUES: Third Annual Project Review and Planning Workshop

On April 2nd 2014, at the hall of College of Aquaculture and Fisheries of Can Tho University (CTU) took place the Third Annual Project Review and Planning Workshop of CLUES, “Climate change and affecting land use in the Mekong Delta: Adaptation of rice-based cropping systems”. It was purposeful to review the activities of the CLUES project after three years of operation and plan the incoming activities in the final year of the project.

The workshop was honored to welcome the distinguished participants: Mr. Geoff Morris, Country Manager – ACIAR Ha Noi, Dr. Reiner Wassmann – IRRI Project Leader, the distinguished guests from ACIAR (Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research), IRRI (International Rice Research Institute), CSIRO Land and Water, IWMI (International Water Management Institute), Cuu Long Delta Rice Research Institute, Southern Institute for Water Resources Planning, Institute of Agricultural Sciences for Southern Vietnam, Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development of four provinces under project implementation in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam; leaders and staffs of six themes of the project. At CTU’s side, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan – Rector of CTU, leaders and staff members of faculties and departments, individuals and organizations who are interested in the project activities.

The CLUES project “Climate change and affecting land use in the Mekong Delta: Adaptation of rice-based cropping systems”, funded by ACIAR implemented in four-year period (3/2012-02/2015), aims to increase the adaptability and resilience of the rice production system in the Mekong Delta towards climate change, creating innovative technical supports and providing new agricultural knowledge to farmers, providing information to serve the management work and establishment of agricultural policies of the local authorities, aiming to ensure sustainable agricultural production and food security in the Mekong Delta.

In a speech at the opening session, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ha Thanh Toan, Rector of CTU kindly sent the honorable thanks and appreciations to the local, national and international organizations for all the kind supports, funding and collaborations with CTU implementing the project. The Rector also expressed a strong confidence to the fruitful collaborative relationship between CTU, local, national and international organizations in the implementation of the project. The integration of six themes will contribute to bring new farming techniques in adaptation with the changing climatic and water conditions, to help improve and strengthen the efficiency of agricultural production towards sustainable development of the Mekong Delta in general and local farmers in CTU’s partners. Rector Toan expressed the strong belief that the relationship between the University and local, national, international organizations will become much closer with many fruitful achievements, especially achieving the projects’ goals and objectives within the target time of the project.

The representatives of ACIAR and IRRI kindly expressed the highly appreciation to the effectiveness of the project activities. The efforts of all parties concerned, especially the members of the Project themes will bring important research findings on the current status of rice production in the region adapting to climate change, the information from the project is very meaningful for the strategic planning, policy making and restructuring of rice production in the Mekong Delta in terms of state management, ensuring sustainable production in quality and quantity as well as the value chains rice in rice production and improve the competitiveness of Vietnamese rice on in the global rice export market. The project is also a good opportunity for scientists, experts and authority agencies to learn from each other and mutual understanding and building effective networks of cooperation in the field.
