The Flasking Room

Many people have asked to see the flasking and cloning operations. Here are a few photos of the culture vessels in their light set-up along with a short discussion in order to help in understanding the growth processes involved.

Hope you will find this page interesting. If you have any other questions or comments contact Al directly by Email. The objective is to simplify propagating plants. If there is another topic you would like to see just drop a note-

Cloning can be easily accomplished using liquid medium instead of a medium solidified with agar.

Autoclavable polypropylene granules here form an inexpensive platform to keep the propagules from sinking to the bottom of the liquid medium.

It gets steamy-hot under the lights. Flasks run to 82F inside.

Phalaenopsis nodes can be easily cultured using simple materials. Common preserving jars are used here to effectively grow node cultures from Phalaenopsis flower stems.

You can still see the 2 inch section of flower stem below the meristem plantlet in the this bottle.
Meristem Phalaenopsis kikis can get to quite a size in their culture bottles. The one on the right is almost blooming size and has never seen a pot.!

Phalaenopsis from seed is one of the easiest to start and the most rewarding to grow. Baby plants grow very quickly and bloom very early. It is possible to grow a plant to flowering from a seed within eighteen months. The two flasks below are about nine months old. You can see how big they have grown.

Looking down into a flask with the lid off.

Its a jungle in there!

For more information on home flasking look at the Other Links page and find Home Flasking Procedure 1 for a list of necessary materials to do simple flasking procedures in the kitchen. For advanced techniques and a more detailed discussion of procedures, go to Flasking Procedure 2.

Many different types of orchids can be grown directly on liquid medium Up to 50 plants easily fit into the small culture tubes.
Some like it hot There is a fluorescent ballast right under this spot for the next shelf down below.

Love to hear stories-so send in your successes and your failures. Best of luck in your flasking endeavors. Seed sowing, meristeming, replating are all easily done. You can do it!
