How does a vulture move in 3-D when locating prey, circling, and landing?

    This kinemage shows the 3-D track of a gliding vulture over about a 5-minute period, plotted from spatial coordinates (x, y, z) measured at 1-second intervals.  The x, y and z axes are fixed to the earth and run north-south, east-west and vertically, respectively.  Animate to build the path up in segments.  View2 is a closeup of the circling, and View3 shows the descent from one side.
    Note that the bird does not really "circle", but flies in a rectangle aligned with the wind direction (downwind, crosswind, upwind, crosswind), which is also how a small airplane circles.

    These observations were made by Prof. Vance Tucker of the Duke University Zoology Department, on March 25, 1988.
