In order to
minimize the impact of the pollution in the Mekong delta due to the
fast economic growth, and to meet the demand of human resource for
solving environmental problems, in 1999, the College of Technology
decided to establish The Environmental Engineering and Renewable
Energy Center. The Center brings together the staff with various
backgrounds and experience relating to environmental engineering,
environmental management, renewable energy, hydraulic engineering
and civil engineering.
From 25/05/2005,
EEREC was renamed to DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL & WATER RESOURCE ENGINEERING.
The
EEREC has responsibilities on:
-
Training scientist and technician on environmental engineering,
hydraulic construction and water management for the provinces in
Mekong Delta.
-
Researching on environmental issues especially on water related
issues in the Mekong Delta.
-
Researching on applying modern technology on environmental
engineering and hydraulic construction in the Mekong Delta.
The center has
4 laboratories: The Environmental Engineering laboratory;
The Environmental Chemistry laboratory; The Environmental Biology
laboratory and the
Hydraulic Engineering laboratory. Thanks to the German, Belgium,
and Dutch partners, the center’s labs are equipped with modern
facilities.
Training activities
The Center is in charge of providing 30 core subjects in the field
of Environmental Engineering, Hydraulic Structure and Water Resource
Management. Besides, The Center’s staffs are also providing lectures
for BSc. and MSc courses of the Fishery and Environmental Science
Departments in Cantho University.
The Center is preparing to open the MSc courses in Environmental
Engineering and Water Resource Management in a near future.
Research
activities
Currently, the center is concentrating on the following research
topics:

Waste water treatment

Water quality monitoring in the Mekong delta
-
Solid waste treatment
-
Biogas digester
system
-
Geographical information system for environmental management and for
water management.

Water management
in the Mekong delta
-
Hydraulic construction.
Human
resource
The Center has 29 staff
members, 2 are Doctors, 11 are Masters and the rest are Bachelors of
Science or Bachelors of Engineering. Currently 2 are doing PhD
study, 4 are studying MSc in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and
in Vietnam.
Staffs are in
various fields: Environmental sciences, environmental engineering,
water management, hydraulic construction, animal husbandry, biology,
chemical engineering, environmental geology, geographic information
system, and information technology.
