In order to minimize the impact of the pollution in the Mekong Delta due to the fast economic growth, and to meet the demand of human resource for solving environmental problems, the Can Tho University College of Technology decided to establish the Environmental Engineering and Renewable Energy Center (EEREC) in 1999, under the authority of Can Tho University Rectorate Board. Since the foundation day, the Center has been tenured by a faculty of diverse academic backgrounds and experience related to environmental engineering, environmental management, renewable energy, hydraulic engineering, and civil engineering. The Center has majored in teaching, doing research, and consulting on environmental-related issues; and on hydraulic construction work plan, design, and management.

In 25/05/2005, EEREC was formally renamed as Department of Environmental  & Water Resources Engineering whose acronym is DEWRE.

The DEWRE is responsible for:

  • Training scientists and technicians on environmental engineering,  hydraulic construction and water management for the Mekong Delta provinces.

  • Doing research on environmental issues especially on water-related issues in the Mekong Delta.

  • Doing research on applying modern technology to environmental engineering and hydraulic construction in the Mekong Delta.

Training activities

DEWRE offers 30 core courses in the field of Environmental Engineering, Hydraulic Structure and Water Resource Management, for which approximately 1000 undergraduate students are currently (2005-2006) attending. DEWRE also offers a GIS (geographical information system) course to BSc. and MSc. students from the Fishery Department and the Environmental Science Department.

At the present time, DEWRE is preparing to open Environmental Engineering and Water Resources Management graduate (Msc.) courses.

Research activities

Currently, DEWRE is concentrating on the following research topics:

  • Waste water treatment

  • Water quality monitoring in the Mekong delta

  • Solid waste treatment

  • Biogas digester system

  • Geographical information system for environmental management and for water management.

  • Water management in the Mekong Delta

  • Hydraulic construction.
